SDG 10 – Indicator 10.2.1 Proportion of first-generation students
It has been widely acknowledged that education is a basic building block of every society. Article 26 of the 1948 Universal Declaration of Human Rights states that “Everyone has the right to education”. Therefore, one of the values that Universitas Sriwijaya holds tightly is equality, regardless of origin, religion, ethnicity, and gender.
An undergraduate student whose parents do not hold a bachelor’s degree is considered first-generation students. To measure this metric, three indicators are applied, namely:
- Proportion of first-generation students.
- Number of students starting a degree.
- Number of first-generation students starting a degree.
Those three indicators are described below.
Figure 1 shows the statistics of three indicators on the first-generation students at Universitas Sriwijaya.
As of 2023, only about 5.48% (1,943 students) of all students of Universitas Sriwijaya (35,463 students) were identified as first-generation students. Referring to this proportion, this group was not significant compared to the total number of Universitas Sriwijaya students starting degree in 2023, which were 35,463 students.
The majority (80.34%) of the first-generation students at Universitas Sriwijaya in 2023 were female students.
The data shows that Universitas Sriwijaya provides equal educational opportunities for all students, regardless of their background. This is important for ensuring that everyone has a fair chance to succeed in their academic pursuits (SBR2024).
